Cut the trimmed asparagus, on the diagonal, into 1 1/2-inch lengths.
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the extra virgin olive oil. Add the asparagus pieces and stir-fry for about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and continue cooking for 1 minute longer, or until crisp-tender.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste.
*To trim asparagus, snap off the tough ends.
